Winter Shoots, Cheerleader Whoot!
What a winter so far. Inches of snow falling and putting a stop, hopefully just a postponement, to a few photoshoots that we were hoping to do; however it was still a beautiful site to see all covered in white as you drive down the road. Still, we’re not the biggest fans of snow.
We didn’t let that stop us from taking advantage of the weather and attempting to capture a few great shots at our homes. The talent is Josh’s mom – Judy Jones.

This picture set up was as follows: Key light to subject’s left (angled to shine half the light on the subject and half to the open space in front of the subject to help light the “particles”), a Fill light to the subjects right (mostly used, with a snoot attached, to light the empty space in front of the subject where the “particles” would be thrown – a highlight for the “particles”), and a Back light directly behind the subject and lowered to about waist level, angled up toward the subject’s neck/back of head.
Shot on a Canon 7D with a Sigma EF 70-300mm lens.
We used the two trees in the background as framing subjects.
No, Josh is not the subject. He is just standing in to show where the subject was.
The snow looks great, right? Well, most of it is not snow. By the time we were set up and able to start shooting, the snow had stopped falling and it was then lightly raining; poor flashes were getting all wet, oh, and so was the talent. :p This caused the fine snow to begin to clump together, thus losing the fine snow desired for the shoot.
What to do, what to do?
Well, thankfully we had some salt inside – Kosher salt. Yes, about 90% of the snow you see in the air and being blown is salt. It looks good right?

That is some great snow!
We do thank Mrs. Jones for participating in this shoot, throwing salt on herself and standing in the cold snow and light rain. She was trooper.
